Relevant Clinical & Research Experience
I am a very experienced and well respected Urologist, global leader in the field of functional and female urology. Graduating from the University of Melbourne in Medicine (MBBS),1985, I completed a Master Medicine in Women’s Health (MMed) in 1997, then a doctorate of Medicine (MD) in 2005. I have been a Councillor for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (2005-2014) and fellow (1994-present).
I am the immediate Past President of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ). Other key leadership roles include Director of Surgery and Head of Urology at Western Health (2016-2021), full Clinical Professor at the University of Melbourne and full Professor of Research at Monash University. My pioneering work in urology has been focused on female pelvic anatomy. My clinical research has involved multiple clinical trials involving devices and medications for overactive bladder, chronic cystitis and other functional urinary problems. I recently first authored a commissioned article for the International Continence Society.
My commitment to improving patient care extends beyond clinical practice into significant contributions to medical literature, with authorship and editorial roles in influential publications on urology and female pelvic medicine. My efforts have been acknowledged through numerous awards and honors, including Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to medical education and urology in 2021.
Professor O’Connell completed the AMA Impairment Assessment Training in February 2024.
